Situated within the planned Yanfangdian Wetland Park in Beijing, Yulin Village is located at the intersection of the Northern Canal, Liangshui River, and Ganggou River. Surrounded by water, it enjoys a unique geographical environment and is the only embankment village along the Northern Canal. Yulin Village is steeped in history and culture: • Imperial Culture, revolving around Emperor Qianlong’s visit during his southern inspection tour. • Banknote Culture, as it was the first of the seven major banknotes along the Grand Canal during the Ming Dynasty • A 200-year old record of the villagers’ preservation efforts on and their important contributions to the Northern Canal • Other cultural relics such as historical scrolls, ancient plaques, ancient anchors and so on. The vast Grand Canal marks the northern tip of Yulinzhuang and the Grand Canal Culture Center was built as an innovation base for the ruling party, as well as an ecological and youth education base. The objectives are to uphold and pass on the Grand Canal culture, tap into the ecological value of the canal and develop the socio-economic advantages of the canal culture.
