Founded in 1958, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) is the oldest social sciences institution in New China, the only comprehensive research institution for humanities and social sciences in Shanghai, and the largest local community college in the country. In 2015, SASS was recognized by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council as the first batch of national top think tanks. In response to the Central Government's call to step up the construction of modern think tanks with Chinese characteristics, SASS aims to becomes China’s leading and internationally-renowned modern socialist think tank, and to establish itself as the main platform for academic exchanges at home and abroad.
Over the years, SASS has studied a large number of issues at the national level and at Shanghai city-level. Several of its recommendations have been accepted by leaders of the Central and Municipal governments, as well as relevant departments. SASS had also won numerous national and Shanghai awards for its research achievements. The institution has established extensive academic relations with several overseas universities and think tank research institutions. More than 30 academicians including Nobel laureates in Economics, Lawrence Klein and Douglas Norse, have joined SASS as honorary researchers and research fellows. The “World Forum on China Studies” has developed into an important platform for China to share their latest research achievements and for exchanges on the research of China Studies, which wields global influence.
